oracle10g - Oracle 10 g - Setting up ODBC Connections and what is TNSNames.ora -
i not understand how oracle works. first tryst oracle, please accept apologies if questions sounds silly or ridiculously silly.
the oracle dba team creates database or schema (what difference?). let call sit_release2. setup odbc connections it. have file called tnsnames.ora resides in oracle_home\network\admin path.
the tnsnames.ora has following information
sit = (description = (address_list = (address = (protocol = tcp)(host = "ipaddress")(port = 1875)) ) (connect_data = (sid = "sit") (server = dedicated) ) )
now, odbc connection exists different database or schema (name of sit_release1) below.
the data source name populated value.
the description populated value.
the tns service name populated value of sit
the user id populated.
question
the tnsnames.ora specifies server connecting , listening via port.
where specifying odbc connection points particular database?
edit
answer
i still not understand how works. happened -
the sid="sit" still remains such, credentials give point different databases.
so, in above screenshot, tns service name still same. however, username/password different , able connect different database.
its sid="sit"
part points database.
the oracle system id (sid) used uniquely identify particular database on system.
for reason, 1 cannot have more 1 database same sid on computer system
